Kick off summer with the annual 2017 Strawberry Jazz Festival being held 11 a.m.-4 p.m. June 4 at Gov. Small Memorial Park - Kankakee County Museum - Civic Auditorium in Kankakee.
The annual event, sponsored by the Community Arts Council of Kankakee County, draws about 5,000 visitors to view the work of more than 90 fine arts and crafts vendors. There also will be a booth featuring Emerging Artists who will show their work for the first time. The festival offers artists an excellent opportunity to show and sell a wide array of art work from paintings, pottery and stained glass to hand painted porcelain, jewelry and garden decorations
At 2 p.m. there will be two baby contests on the Civic stage, one for babies and another for babies & baby photographs.
At 2:55 p.m. a Strawberry Prince and Princess will be crowned. Get applications for these contests on the CAC website (above) or at the Arts Center at Northfield Mall.
For children there will be games, a glass dime toss, face painting and a visit to a 19th century, one-room school.
Come for lunch. There will be burgers, hot dogs, pork chops, pulled pork and Italian sausage sandwiches. Try some kettle corn, cotton candy and funnel cakes, and watch for strawberry treats: shortcake, pie, ice cream and luscious chocolate-covered strawberries.
Parking is free. Eighth Avenue will be closed between Water and Charles streets, and there will be no parking on the south side of Water Street from Eighth Avenue to Wall Street. Visitors can park in the lot across from the Civic Auditorium and in the field along Calista Avenue.
Handicapped parking will be available. Signs will guide visitors. For more information call 815-954-7702 or visit www.communityartscouncil.org.
